Peaceful Piecing: Quilt-Making Lessons at the Library

Looking for a relaxing, portable creative outlet that is good for your health? Handwork has been shown to reduce blood pressure, increase mindfulness, and the opportunity to slow down. Join us for a three-part beginner series on hand piecing. Participants will complete a quilt square which could be used for a pillow or the start of a quilt top. The square will incorporate many techniques, including joining multiple seams, inset seams, and curved piecing. Participants should bring their own supplies, including cotton fabric. See below for specifics. In addition, we’ll cover making templates, fabric preparation and pressing. If you are interested in learning with others in support of forming a local quilt group, please join us! Lessons take place from 10am – 11:30 am at the library.

April 2 – making templates, cutting, and basic stitching, and joining four patches.

April 9 – joining 8 points, y-inset seams, and piecing curves

April 23 – joining units together and basting for hand quilting

Participants should bring their own basic supplies: scissors (sewing and paper), needles, neutral-colored thread, thimble (if desired), glue stick, and 3 – 4 different pieces of cotton fabric. 1/8 – 1/4 yard of each should be more than enough.

Rita Floess has been enjoying quilting for many years and enjoys sharing and learning with others.

To sign up for quilt-making lessons call the library at 518-658-2231 or email Director Sara Rogers at [email protected].
