TITLE: "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan"
AUTHOR: Lisa See
GENRE: Adult Fiction/Historical Fiction
PAGES: 258
PUBLISHED: 2005
UHLS MATERIAL: Book, Audiobook
REVIEWER: Rebekah L.
RATING:
"Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a beautiful, well written book about the life of country women in 19th century China. It describes through the eyes of a woman, the life of women, their role in society, their value and customs. It uses true historical contexts, and it describes in detail the terrible ordeal of foot binding, which all women underwent, and which determined their place in the household as well as in society. It also discussed a secret women's language that they used as a way of communicating without the knowledge and control of men. The use of this language gave them strength, encouragement, and worth.
This novel is heart rending, appalling, facinating, and beautiful. I found it to be a quick read, yet it stayed with me as I went about my daily life through slightly different eyes, imagining doing all that I do on feet no larger than three inches. I feel that any book that helps us to reflect on our own life, whether to hold up a mirror or to offer a comparison is a book worth reading, because it allows us to continue growing."

RATING:
"This book was great, I enjoyed it very much. It had me laughing out loud. Great little stories about growing older and how we deal with it all. Would recommend it to any women who can laugh at themselves . It's a quick read - can be done in one sitting. I really could relate to a lot of it in a personal way."

"Great Book! As a parent and once a child this book gives the dynamics of both that one may not have realized. Mitch Albom has once again produced a winner! "
